Your QuickTime™ Demo Pack includes the following items. Put the files in their appropriate locations on your hard drive.
1. QuickTime™ Init: If you are using System 7.0, put this file in the Extensions folder in your System folder and restart your computer. If you are using System 6.0, put this file in your System folder.
2. For System 6 folder: If you are using System 6.0, put the FS6 Patch file in your System folder and restart your computer.
3. Canvas Tools folder: Contains the new QuickTime tool and the modified Slides tool. Put these tools in your Canvas Tools folder.
4. Scrapbook folder: You can store and play QuickTime movies in these Scrapbooks. Put the appropriate Scrapbook file in your System folder. Since this will override your current Scrapbook, make a copy of your current Scrapbook if it contains items you need.
5. Demo.sea: Double-click this icon to extract a Canvas document called Canvas Demo. This contains some sample files and movies.
Note: Disable the QM Menu™ extension before using QuickTime in Canvas.
Placing a Movie in Canvas
To place a QuickTime movie in Canvas at its default size, select the QuickTime tool from the Object Tools palette (its icon looks like a movie camera) and click where you want the top left corner of the movie to appear in the document. To size the movie as you place it, position the pointer where you want the top left corner to appear and drag to where you want the bottom right corner to be. In either case, when you release the mouse button, a directory dialog box appears from which you can choose a movie to open. Select the Show Preview check box to view the poster of the movie. If no preview appears, click the Create button to create one. If the movie has been edited during the current session of Canvas, the Create button will say Update; click Update to update the preview.
Playing a Movie
Double-click a movie to play it. To stop the movie, click the mouse button.
If you double-click a movie to play it and Canvas cannot find the original movie file, an alert box will appear asking you to locate the file. Click OK and a directory dialog box will appear. Locate the file in the directory and click Open to play the movie or click Cancel to discontinue.
Once you bring a movie into Canvas, you can select it and reposition, resize, cut, copy, or paste it like any Canvas object. To open the Movie Options dialog box, select the movie and click the badge (an icon that resembles a strip of film) at the bottom right corner of the movie. If the badge is not visible, click the bottom right corner of the movie.
Movie Options dialog box
This dialog box lets you edit the selected movie's audio and playback rate in Canvas but will not change the actual movie file.
• Audio: The Audio slide bar controls the movie's volume. Drag the thumb or click the horizontal bar to choose your setting. Select the Mute check box to turn off the sound without changing the slide bar setting. If a movie has no audio tracks, Mute will be checked and the Audio slide bar will be dimmed.
• Rate: The Rate slide bar controls the playback speed of the movie. Drag the thumb or click the horizontal bar to choose your setting. If the Rate is set to 0.5 then the movie will play at half speed. If it is set to 2.0 then it will play at twice the default speed.
• Default: Click the Default button to restore the Audio and Rate controls to the settings with which the movie was saved. Clicking Default also restores the movie to the size at which it was saved. A movie generally has better animation and image quality when played at its default size.
• Show Control Bar: Select this option to display a control bar at the bottom of the movie.
Control Bar
The Control Bar, displayed at the bottom of the movie when Show Control Bar is selected, lets you control the playback of the movie. To use the Control Bar options, first click the movie to select it.
• Sound: Click the speaker icon at the far left side of the Control Bar to turn the movie's sound on or off. When the sound is on, the speaker appears to emit waves. This option is equivalent to the Mute check box in the Movie Options dialog box.
• Progress Bar: The Progress Bar displays the current movie position. Drag the thumb or click the horizontal bar to move to a different frame in the movie. As you move to the right in the Progress Bar, the frames move forward.
• Frame Decrement: Click this icon (a left-facing arrow with an adjacent vertical line) to advance the movie backward one frame at a time.
• Reverse Play: Click the left-facing arrow icon to play the movie in reverse. The movie will stop when it reaches the beginning. If the movie is at the beginning when you click Reverse Play, it will advance to the end before playing in reverse.
• Stop: Click Stop (the icon with two parallel lines) to stop the movie during Play or Reverse Play.
• Frame Increment: Click this icon (a right-facing arrow with an adjacent vertical line) to advance the movie forward one frame at a time.
• Play: Click the right-facing arrow icon to play the movie. The movie will stop when it reaches the end.
Canvas Slide Shows with Movies
The Canvas Slides tool now lets you control how movies in slide shows are played. It also lets you set the default speed at which movies created from Canvas slide shows play. Several new options in the Slide Specifications dialog box provide these controls.
• Change Every: You can now type decimal values between 0 and 99 seconds in this text box to set the intervals between slides. This interval also determines the default interval between movie frames if you save the slide show as a movie. This provides greater control over slide show animation quality.
• Auto-Play QuickTime Movies: This option affects slide shows with slides that contain movies. When this option is selected and you click Play, the movie will play automatically when the slide show arrives at its layer. If multiple movies are on one layer, they will play according to their stacking order on the layer. If Canvas cannot find the original movie, or if the movie is on a master layer, Canvas displays the movie's poster but does not play the movie.
If the Change Every option is selected, then Auto-Play QuickTime Movies is checked automatically. If Auto-Play QuickTime Movies is not selected, when you arrive at a layer with a movie you must double-click the movie to play it.
• Show Pointer: Select this option to display the pointer on screen while the slide show is playing. When Auto-Play QuickTime Movies is not selected, this option must be selected to allow you to double-click a movie.
Creating QuickTime Movies
The QuickTime tool also lets you create QuickTime movies from Canvas slide shows. This tool is a multiplex icon; double-click it to open the QuickTime Specifications dialog box. This dialog box lets you control the settings for your movie.
QuickTime Specifications dialog box
• Master Layer is Active/Not Active: This sentence indicates whether a master layer has been chosen in the Slide Specifications dialog box. You can change this option using the Slide Specifications dialog box.
• Frames change every...: This sentence indicates the intervals between movie frames. You can change this option using the Change Every option in the Slide Specifications dialog box. If Change Every was not selected, the frames will change every 0.1 seconds.
• Maximize: These options control the compression method used when saving the movie. When you choose a Maximize option, Canvas chooses a compressor from the QuickTime Init which most resembles that option. Currently there is only one compressor, an animation compressor. Choose the Maximize option that best fits your needs.
•• Animation Quality maximizes the number of frames per second.
•• Image Quality best preserves the sharpness of the images.
•• Compression minimizes the movie's disk space.
• Make movies self-contained: If this option is not selected, a link is established between each movie in the document and its original movie file; the resulting document will therefore be smaller. If this option is selected, everything that is needed to play the movie will be contained in one file. If the original movie files are not on the same disk as the movie, a link cannot be established and you must select this option.
• Show Movie Badges: Select this option to display the badge at the bottom right corner of each movie in the document. The badge is always displayed when the Control Bar is showing.
You can also open the QuickTime Specifications dialog box in one of the following ways:
1. Select QuickTime™ from the Managers submenu in the Edit menu
2. Hold down the Command key when saving a document in the QuickTime™ Movie format
Saving QuickTime movies
To save a document as a movie, choose QuickTime™ Movie from the File Format pop-up menu of the Save As dialog box. Canvas will use the current settings in the QuickTime Specifications dialog box when saving the movie. To change these settings, hold down the Command key while clicking the Save button to open the QuickTime Specifications dialog box.
When you save in the QuickTime™ Movie format, Canvas updates its links to the original movie files for any movies contained in the document. If Canvas cannot find an original movie file, an alert box will appear asking you to locate the file. An alert box will appear for each occurrence of a movie in the document whose original file cannot be found. Click OK and a directory dialog box will appear. Locate the file in the directory and click Open. If you cannot locate a file, click Cancel to continue saving; Canvas will then save only the movie's poster.
